Course Content – Print Media Training
Our print media training courses are tailored around you and the media you want to connect with, whether it’s the national press or the trade titles specific to your industry. Furthermore, if you are new to media relations and need an introduction or if you simply need to polish your interview skills, our experienced team will design the media training around your requirements.
The print media courses generally include some background theory to explain how the journalists and editors operate, but the focus is on realistic and testing practice interviews, all followed with feedback to improve your approach. Below, as a guide, we provide an outline to show what we advise covering in your training session.
The Theory
- An introduction to the trade and national media: The news titles you could face / What print journalists want from spokespeople / The layers and process of the news machine / Understanding when a story is newsworthy
- Preparing your approach: Refining your key messages / Researching the audience and journalist / Setting your agenda / Creating good quotes
- During the interview: Bridging and other interview handling techniques / Body language and voice control / Dos and don’ts with the print media
The Practice Interviews
The interviews and rehearsals we design for the print media training sessions are testing, realistic and relevant. This is to ensure that, whatever sort of interview situation spokespeople face in the outside world, they will be prepared and confident.
Depending on your requirements, we will run a series of interviews (with filming and playback if required), usually covering a number of the following types of format:
- Telephone – replicating calling into the newsroom
- Video conference – practicing interviews from your computer
- Face to Face – in front of the interviewer
- Doorstep – being faced by journalists outside your office
