Course Content – Financial Media Training
These courses are tailored around you and the specific financial and business media you want to connect with, whether it’s trade press, nationals or TV and radio. The training can be run for those who are new to media relations or those who are keen to brush up their interview skills or even practice new key messages.
The financial media courses generally include some background theory to explain how the journalists and reporters operate, but the focus is on realistic and testing practice interviews, all followed with feedback to improve your approach. Below, as a guide, we provide an outline to show what we advise covering in your training session.
The Theory
- An introduction to the business and financial media: The main news titles you could face / What financial journalists want from spokespeople / The differences between general and business news / Understanding when a financial or business story is newsworthy
- Preparing your approach: Refining your key messages / Researching the audience and journalist / Setting your agenda / Presenting your numbers
- During the interview: Bridging and other interview handling techniques / Body language and voice control / Dos and don’ts with the financial media
The Practice Interviews
The interviews and rehearsals we design for the financial media training sessions are testing, realistic and relevant. This is to ensure that, whatever sort of interview situation spokespeople face in the outside world, they will be prepared and confident.
Depending on your requirements, we will run a series of interviews (with filming and playback if required), usually covering a number of the following types of format:
- Telephone – replicating calling into the newsroom or studio
- Video conference – practicing interviews from your computer
- Face to Face – in front of the interviewer
- Down the line – facing the camera, using an earpiece
- Doorstep – being faced by reporters outside your office
